A convenient guide to packing light and taking everything you REALLY need.

TRAVEL PACKING GUIDE:  Spring Season

One SMALL ROLLING BAG and ONE SMALL DUFFLE to fit under the seat of the plane, such as those by LL Bean.  You can also take one small PURSE/ORGANIZER (see below), put the purse/organizer in the duffle during travel-to be taken out and used later for your outings.

AIRLINE TICKETS AND ITINERARY -check flight schedule before you leave.

PASSPORT, up to date, make an extra copy and place it in your bag or two, one in the rolling bag and one in the duffle. Also have extra copies of any travelers checks you may take.

PASSPORT CARRIER/ORGANIZER flat enough to carry under your clothing , preferably one that will hold your PASSPORT,CREDIT CARD, DRIVERS LICENSE OR PHOTO ID, CASH, TRAVELERS CHECKS  if you take any and TINY ADDRESS BOOK

SMALL PURSE/ORGANIZER such as the LEATHER WALLET BAG we sell here for $39 can be taken to carry for day outings to hold your Camera, lipstick, sunglasses, tissues, sunscreen, phone (if taking), scarf if needed.  This bag will  also be your evening bag and it should be packed inside your small duffle during travel time.  This bag is not for the small essential important items-keep those in your Passport carrier/organizer.

CLOTHING:

2 PAIRS OF PANTS OR CAPRIS- darker colors or base color such as black, brown, navy, dark khaki

ONE SKIRT or you could take a TUNIC TOP in place of the skirt which will double as a dress and can be worn over your pants or tights (leggings).  The skirt should be a simple elastic pull on.

ONE PAIR OF LEGGINGS or tights -these are like having another pair of pants, can  also be worn under pants for cold weather, they usually wash and dry quickly.  They can be worn under a tunic top or skirt as well.  You could take two pair for longer trips.

Light WT JACKET WITH POCKETS

2 SLIM TANKS for color and preferably washable silk knit or very thin cotton-the advantage of the silk knit is that  fits close to the body, it layers nicely and slides under other fabrics easily, is is also very lightweight, washes nicely and dries quickly

ONE LONG SLEEVE SILK TEE Wear this alone or over one or both of the silk tanks for more warmth.  Also wear them under your tops or tunic.

TWO TO THREE TOPS or TWO TOPS AND ONE TUNIC.  You will wear these on their own or layer over the silk tops, depending on the weather.  One of the tops could be a light merino wool or similiar cardigan if the weather is going to be on the cool side.  It’s important that it be a cardigan so it can be worn open or removed if it gets too warm.  Wear the cardigan over both the slim tank and or the long sleeve silk tee as needed, it can also be worn over a tunic-this layering is fashionable and acceptable.

NIGHTWEAR-Small light weight, preferably silk or fine cotton gown like Hanro makes.  Silk dries faster if you need to wash it.

THREE PAIRS OF UNDERPANTS AND ONE OR TWO BRAS-Hand wash as needed with your bar soap.

SWIM WEAR if needed-your linen scarf/shawl can double as a bathing suit cover-up

ACCESSORIES:

PACKABLE HAT  for sunny outings and walks

SCARF linen gauze, lt. wt gauzy cotton or silk chiffon-a wider scarf can double as a wrap for evening, also will work as a swim wear coverup.

COMFORTABLE SHOES FOR WALKING  & SOCKS -2 PAIRS (Wash as needed) LIGHTWEIGHT wool such as those from Smartwool are excellent.  You can find these wool socks on line and on sale through Sierra Trading Post.   You can wear two pair for extra protection from shoe rubbing and they wash and dry quickly.   Nylon might also work for the second pair.  I would avoid acrylic.

ONE PAIR OF DRESSY SHOES if needed-pack shoes in clear plastic bag or shoe bag-to keep the dirt off your clothes.

FLIP FLOPS - if you are taking swim wear

COSTUME JEWELRY - one or two pairs of earrings and one necklace, watch if you wear one.  If you take a PHONE it usually has the time and you won’t need a watch.

SUNGLASSES

TOILETRIES;

LIQUIDS-Must be under 3 OZ and fit in your One Quart clear baggie.  Keep it handy in your duffle bag for airport check in.  You can buy small leak proof 1 OZ containers (available from REI, use hotel size containers or check the travel size items at the grocery or beauty supply shops.
